Course Description
Microdermabrasion Fundamentals: In this lecture and hands-on training course will teach proper Basic Microdermabrasion (MDA) application, including indications and contraindications.
ACA: Microdermabrasion Advanced: In this lecture and hands-on training course, teachers will teach the student advanced combination therapies utilizing both Microdermabrasion (MDA) application and chemexfoliation applications for accelerated results in pre-treated skins. Combined MDA therapy produces dual exfoliation, blending mechanical and chemical resurfacing, peeling the skin deeper than basic MDA. Indications, contraindications, and safety measures will also be addressed.
AMA: Chemexfoliation Fundamentals: In this lecture and hands-on training course, students will cover theory/lecture on diverse skin types and different resurfacing agents used in aesthetics; including mechanical, enzymatic, and chemical exfoliation. Students will also undergo a comprehensive training of Cosmetic Skin typing (CST), Skin Photo Typing (Fitzpatrick), Glogau Wrinkle Assessment, pre and post-treatment protocols, ingredient chemistry, and proper application methodology.
Indications, contraindications, and safety measures will also be addressed.
AMA: Chemexfoliation Advanced: In this lecture and hands-on training course, students will gain a deeper knowledge of deeper chemical exfoliation procedures used in aesthetics. Students will further cover Acne Grade skin typing, Rosacea grades, pre and post-treatment protocols, ingredient chemistry, and proper application methodology for gel-based exfoliants. Students will perform and receive a skin type-specific (STS), time-dependent, acid peeling procedure. Indications, contraindications, and safety measures will also be addressed.

What constitutes a medical treatment?
A medical treatment is a treatment that impacts or affects the living tissue of the body. For example, most states believe that any treatment that affects anything outside the dead skin cells, i.e. the epidermis, is considered to be a medical treatment. There is some confusion about whether certain treatments constitute medical treatments, such as microneedling and dermaplaning. Most states do recognize these as medical treatments needing licensed medical professional oversight.
If a cleansing or exfoliation procedure is part of a medical procedure and is within the scope of practice of a dermatologist, can the dermatologist delegate the ability to perform this medical act to another person?
The department does not define or regulate medical procedures. Medical procedures may be delegated pursuant to the laws and rules regulating physicians. Physicians should consult with the Texas Medical Board about what constitutes a medical act and to whom medical acts may be delegated.

What is microdermabrasion?
The term microdermabrasion refers to a technology using suction and a rough surface to exfoliate the superficial keratanized layers of the skin. A microdermabrasion treatment involves a trained technician mechanically exfoliating the skin through a hand piece.
May I perform microdermabrasion under my esthetician license?
It depends. estheticians may remove the excess accumulations of dead skin cells from a person’s skin by exfoliation. One method of exfoliation is microdermabrasion, commonly performed with a specialized device. To the extent that the microdermabrasion device and technique removes only dead skin cells from a client’s skin, then an esthetician may exfoliate dead skin cells from a client’s skin through microdermabrasion. Deeper microdermabrasion treatments are physician-administered and penetrate the dermis (living tissue).
What is a chemical peel?
Chemical peels involve the application of a chemical solution to remove the dead and damaged outer layers of skin. Chemical peels improve and smooth skin texture and help to reveal younger, clearer, more radiant skin.
May I perform chemical peels under my esthetician license?
It depends. estheticians may remove the excess accumulations of dead skin cells from a person’s skin. The removal of excess accumulations of dead cells is called many different things, including peeling or exfoliation. estheticians may perform “light peels” or “superficial peels” which are noninvasive and/or nonagressive in nature and enhance or beautify the epidermis by removing dead cells, not the dermis (living tissue). “Medium peels” and “deep peels” are physician-administered and penetrate the dermis (living tissue).
